The attractive island of Hydra has the
most stylish and beautiful town of the islands of the Saronic
Gulf.
The wealthy of the island started when rich Greek families
settled there to escape Turkish persecution. Superb grey-stone,
whitewashed and pastel mansions with red-tiles roofs are still
standing, testifying about the glorious past of Hydra.
The island was one of the first Greek islands to open its
doors to foreigners, seduced its beauty and charm. It was
once the favourite destination for many artists and celebrities.
Hydra is famous for its wonderful and magical
town but lacks in sandy beaches. This is due to the fact that
the island’s coasts are mostly made of huge rocks, which are
flat, giving the possibility to lay down on them.
The only beach with sand is Mandraki Beach but it is the property
of the hotel standing on it; only the windsurfing centre is
open to everyone. A very few pebble beaches are also available
on Hydra.
The many large rocks on the coast offer refreshing and immediately
deep waters of great deep blue colour.
