The island of Aegina is part of the Saronic
Gulf Islands. It is the closest getaway from Athens, attracting
thousands of Athenians during week-ends.
Aegina is famous for its production of pistachio; those coloured
tasty nuts can be found in great quantity in the capital of
the island, Aegina Town, and in the rest of it.
The town is a lovely place with whitewashed houses and beautiful
neoclassical buildings which remind the glorious past of Aegina.
The superb 5th century Temple of Aphaia is the jewel of the
island.
The island of Aegina is not famous for
its beaches. The touristy resort of Agia Marina has a fully-organised
beach with grey sand, boarded by numerous hotels, bars, snack
bars and restaurants.
For nicer and quitter beaches one has to look on the coast
near Marathonas, south of Aegina Town; there, are the best
beaches of the island and the best waters.
Other beaches can be found near the fishing village of Perdika
and nearby the capital of the island. Fine sandy beaches are
available on the nearby islet of Angistri.
