The island
of Lefkada is part of the Ionian Islands. It is
the fourth largest island of the group and is connected
to the mainland by a bridge.
Lefkada is famous for its wonderful long beaches
of white sand and the incredible turquoise colour
of its waters. It is also famous for being the birthplace
of the Greek poets Angelos Sikelianos and Aristotelis
Valaoritis, as well as Lefkadios Hern, Japan’s national
poet.
The island suffered from a severe earthquake, which
explains the particular architecture of its capital.
The island of Lefkada is famous all over
Greece for the extreme beauty of its beaches. This is the
main cause of its high tourism.
The fine white sand and the incredibly turquoise waters are
forming a particularly beautiful scenery, reminding of tropical
islands.
Most of the beaches scattered on the eastern coast are have
smooth pebbles, while the majority of the beaches on the western
coast have pure white sand. The two major resorts of Lefkada
are Nidri and Vassiliki which has a big windsurf centre.
