Kythira Greece:
Pictures of Kythira island, Ionian
:: About Kythira Island
Kythira is the most remote of the Ionian
Islands, lying on the foot of the Peloponnese, between the
Ionian and Aegean seas.
It is the only island of the group to have an architecture
reminding the one of the Cyclades. It is quite a barren island
but has some of the best beaches of the Ionians.
Because of its location, Kythira is still unknown among foreign
tourists and has the privilege to be one of the few islands
to have escaped mass tourism. Only some Greek tourists visit
the island, which is very authentic and unspoiled.
The beaches of Kythira are scattered around
the southern, eastern and north-eastern coasts.
Some of the best beaches of the island are Kaladi Beach, near
Paleopoli and Fyri Ammos, close to the capital. They both
have fine sand and crystal-clear waters. The twin sandy bays
at Kapsali are famous for their wonderful aquamarine waters.
A fine white sandy beach can be found at Diakofti, offering
a few taverns and accommodations. More beaches are available
on Kythira and on the nearby Antikythira islet.
