The wonderful island of Lesvos (Mytilene
in Greek) is the largest island of the North-Eastern Islands
and the third largest island of Greece.
It is a superb island famous for its production of ouzo (Greek
strong alcohol), known to be the best of Greece. Lesvos has
a strong cultural tradition, being the birthplace of the Greek
female poet Sappho (7th century) who wrote poems about lesbian
relationship, of the ancient writer Aesop, the philosophers
Aristotle and Epicurus, the poet Odyseas Elytis and the painter
Theophilos. |

Most of the beaches of Lesvos are situated
on its southern and western coasts.
Some of the most famous beaches of the island are Geras Beach
with crystalline waters and pine trees, Melinda Beach with
golden sand and mirror-like waters, the long sandy beach of
Mithymna, the organized touristy resorts of Petra Beach, Skala
Eressou and Skala Kalonis, the beach of Skala Sikamias, the
fine sandy beach of Skala Polichnitou and the long, wide beach
of Vatera which has been awarded by the EU Blue Flag. |
